I can't pick up this book without chuckling uncontrollably. And if I read it for long enough, I will laugh so hard I either cry or snort whatever I'm drinking out my nose. Just pure genius.

How much of our lives are determined by fate and/or chance, and how much do we have control of? Four teenage siblings aim to answer this question after visiting a mystical woman who tells each of them when they will die. Through a NYC childhood in the 70s to the AIDS epidemic in SF in the 80s and onward, the eldest brother is trapped in shame from his past, the eldest sister becomes a magician, the youngest brother living without fear, and the youngest sister trying to control everything with her OCD, this book begs you to live with equal measures of intention and abandon.

Although fictional, Suite Francaise was written during the Nazi occupation of France by a woman who would, unfortunately, lose her life in a concentration camp. For this reason, the historical feel of authenticity permeates the pages. This wonderful novel was found by the author's daughter and published long after the war. You will get swept up in this incredibly beautiful story!!

If you've read Neil deGrasse Tyson and feel like you want to dive a little deeper into the world of physics, give Lawrence M. Krauss a try. He explores complicated concepts in a way non-scientists (like me) can understand, without ever talking down to readers.

I'm so tired of seeing these horrible fad diets come and go--junk science, I say! This book is full of sound nutritional advice based on the most recent studies (there are more than 150 pages of footnotes that refer to the studies). Find out exactly how your food affects you! You'll be glad you did.

Zumas, a creative writing professor at PSU, created a ficitonal Oregon atmosphere where abortion is illegal, laws just passed forbidding single parents from adopting, and IVF is banned. Five women navigate their different relationships to womanhood & motherhood. Each woman character is unique, and yet I related with them in profound ways.

Red Clocks is an engaging novel; the best I've read in years. The character Gin still lives in my thoughts weeks after putting the book down.

On the surface, Annie Hartnett's Rabbit Cake has all of the elements that make me shun a novel: child narrator, dead mother, falling-apart family, a character struggling with mental illness. But Hartnett deftly weaves those elements into a novel full of emotional depth, sly and quirky humor, and chacaters who defy and rise above type. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
